He has 15 catches for 173 yards and 3 touchdowns, and reports around the team describe him as the primary tight end who already plays the heavier snap load. With Fant inactive, that role should only grow. Johnson also has the profile New Orleans trusts near the goal line. At 6-foot-4, he has been one of Tyler Shough’s preferred mismatch targets in condensed space, and outside analysis noted Johnson already had 4 red-zone targets and 2 touchdowns early in the season. Saints coaches and Shough have both praised the tight end group’s ability to “box people out” and win tight-window throws, and now Johnson becomes the clear top in-house option for that job. Chris Olave is still the Saints’ top overall receiving threat and may lead the team in yards and targets Monday night. He has 375 receiving yards on 36 targets and is the focal point of the passing game. But in pure red-zone terms, Johnson is better positioned to replace Fant’s touchdown role because of his size, usage, and established chemistry with Shough near the goal line. If New Orleans needs one player to absorb Fant’s scoring opportunities and help rescue its 1-2 start, Johnson is the best bet.
