David Ortiz Toasts Yankees' 3-Game ALDS Sweep With Tequila and Cigars on FS1

Q: After a historic sweep and viral on-air mockery, will the Yankees finally part ways with manager Aaron Boone?

Probably not immediately. The sweep by Tampa Bay, the Yankees’ 17th straight season without a title, and the public embarrassment of David Ortiz’s on-air mockery all intensify pressure on Aaron Boone. Boone’s postseason track record is a real issue: across nine seasons, his Yankees have consistently handled weaker playoff teams but struggled badly against equal or better opponents, and they have now gone out in the ALDS in back-to-back years. Still, the strongest evidence points to Boone returning for 2027. He is under contract through next season, owner Hal Steinbrenner is typically patient, and general manager Brian Cashman publicly backed him, calling Boone “a really good manager.” Aaron Judge also defended Boone after the elimination, saying he puts players in position to succeed and has the clubhouse behind him. Multiple reports indicate Boone retains support from the people who matter most internally. The case for firing him is straightforward: repeated October failures, persistent sloppy play, and the sense that nine years may be the end of a manager’s shelf life. But the Yankees have generally avoided making abrupt in-contract managerial changes, and a likely labor stoppage would make a transition to a new manager more complicated. So the more likely outcome is not a firing now, but Boone returning without an extension and entering 2027 under heavy scrutiny. If the same pattern repeats next postseason, that is when a change becomes far more likely.

Q: Did a controversial fan interference call truly doom New York's postseason, or is their championship drought a deeper roster issue?

The fan-interference call hurt, but it did not truly doom the Yankees; the sweep exposed deeper roster and execution problems that go beyond one replay decision. The overturned Anthony Volpe homer in Game 3 was correctly ruled spectator interference after review. Umpires determined the ball would not have left the park, though it also would not have been caught, so Volpe was awarded an RBI double instead of a two-run homer. That changed a 4-2 deficit to 4-3 rather than a tie game, and it clearly drained momentum. But New York still had chances afterward and did not score again. The larger issue is that the Yankees were outplayed across the series. They never led in any of the 27 innings, scored only five total runs, hit around .130, and were shut down by Tampa Bay’s pitching. In Game 2, defensive mistakes and sloppy play compounded the problem. In Game 1, they managed only one hit. That is not the profile of a team undone by a single call. Their longer championship drought also points to structural concerns. Aaron Judge’s absence mattered, but one missing star does not fully explain why a club with one of baseball’s highest payrolls looked overmatched offensively and defensively. Tampa Bay’s cleaner defense, deeper pitching plan, and more complete lineup highlighted where New York falls short. The interference ruling became the night’s flashpoint. The bigger story is that the Yankees lacked enough offense, depth, and sharpness to survive against a better-prepared roster.

FS1 analyst David Ortiz celebrated New York's ALDS exit on air after Tampa Bay completed a 3-game sweep, pouring tequila shots and handing out cigars in the studio.
The bit played off Ortiz's long Red Sox-Yankees rivalry and his regular on-set needling of former Yankees stars Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez.
Alex Rodriguez and host Kevin Burkhardt joined the toast, while Jeter declined the tequila and said it was not something he would ever put in his body.
The segment turned the Yankees' latest postseason disappointment into a live TV taunt, with Ortiz leaning into the rivalry as New York's offseason began.
