Summary
Mark Gurman said Meta’s new $1,299.99 VR glasses could decide whether VR can break through, arguing that if a lighter, more capable headset fails, “nothing will.”
100-gram glasses — with processing, battery and storage offloaded to a 300-gram puck — were unveiled Sept. 23 and are scheduled to ship in spring 2027.
Reality Labs lost $19.19 billion in 2025, up from $17.73 billion a year earlier, but Meta’s core apps generated $102.47 billion in operating income — more than $5 for every $1 the unit lost.
Meta still posted a 41.4% operating margin in 2025; without Reality Labs, that margin would have been about 51%, showing the VR bet is costly but not financially destabilizing.
Gurman was far more bullish on Meta’s smart-glasses business, calling the company the top player in the category as Apple’s expected rival product remains about a year away.
