Summary
An Aug. 27 Instagram post promoting an AI filmmaking course has been identified as the source of the viral dancing Rumpelstiltskin clip, debunking claims that it came from a 1987 movie.
The video spread wider in September after users paired it with Riff Raff's 2014 track "Tip Toe Wing in My Jawwdinz," helping turn the faux-retro scene into the "Rumpelstiltskin tiptoeing in my Jordans" meme.
Its old-movie look led some viewers to misremember it as real vintage footage or even something they had seen before, echoing a Mandela-effect style false-memory response.
Researchers and media analysts say that confusion also shows how convincing AI visuals have become—and how a fake Hollywood backstory can boost curiosity and sharing even when authenticity remains a trust issue.
