Summary
New York carried a 58-54 edge into halftime of its season opener against Philadelphia at Madison Square Garden, beginning its title defense with a four-point lead.
Andre Drummond drove the second-quarter push with 10 points and 11 rebounds in 14 minutes against his former team, helping offset the loss of departed center Mitchell Robinson.
Jordan Clarkson added 4 points in 5 minutes and Jose Alvarado scored 5 off the bench, answering coach Mike Brown's call for reserves to fight for minutes.
Philadelphia stayed close behind Tyrese Maxey, who scored 12 points in the first quarter as the Knicks led only 25-23 after one.
The opener comes four months after New York's first championship since 1973, with all five starters from the title team back for another run.
