Summary
Anna Mochalova, 32, was arrested Saturday and charged after police linked her to two Oct. 21 Midtown assaults, including the stabbing of a rabbi in the Diamond District.
Two hours before the rabbi attack, a 37-year-old man was cut in the forearm near West 45th Street and Avenue of the Americas; the rabbi, 26, was later stabbed in the back outside 15 West 47th Street and hospitalized in stable condition.
Surveillance footage and public tips helped identify the suspect, with Manhattan Shomrim saying its volunteers, NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force officers and other Shomrim groups aided the arrest after a witness appeal.
The rabbi told the New York Post he believed he was targeted because he was visibly Jewish, and the NYPD said its Hate Crime Task Force is investigating both incidents.
The case lands amid a broader rise in New York City hate crimes: 463 were confirmed through September, up nearly 13% year over year, with 245 anti-Jewish incidents accounting for more than half.
