Khronos has published two OpenXR Spatial Container extensions that let apps create system-managed 3D spaces and switch each container between bounded multitasking and full immersive modes.
Those containers standardize volumetric app behavior across OpenXR headsets, aiming to give developers a cross-platform alternative to vendor-specific APIs for mixed-reality multitasking.
Google signaled support, saying it is excited to bring Spatial Containers to Android XR, while Khronos is also building renderer-related extensions tuned for both high-performance and lower-power hardware.
The model resembles Apple Vision Pro's Shared Space and Full Space, and Pico OS 6 on the upcoming Pico Space Pro already uses a similar system, while Meta Horizon OS and Android XR currently allow only one 3D app at a time.
Extension specs and sample code are available now, and Khronos expects implementations to begin rolling out across the OpenXR ecosystem later this year.
