Jason Williams Blasts LeBron James' Anthem Routine, Says 76ers Star Should Stand Still

Q: If the rule never said “stand motionless,” should the NBA clarify what respectful anthem behavior really means?

Yes. If the NBA’s rule only requires a “respectful” or “dignified” posture, but does not define whether players must remain motionless, the league should clarify it. The current ambiguity is what fuels disputes like the one involving LeBron James. Jason Williams and Charles Barkley both argued that players should stand still, but the written policy, as publicly described, requires players, coaches and staff to stand along the foul lines in a respectful posture during the anthem. It does not appear to explicitly ban small movements. That leaves too much room for subjective judgments about what is disrespectful. A clearer rule would help everyone. Players would know the standard in advance, teams would not be left guessing about enforcement, and the league could avoid selective or inconsistent discipline. That matters because there has been no public report of James being fined, even though critics assumed his actions violated league rules. The NBA does not need to write an overly rigid policy, but it should define the baseline. If the league wants players to be still, it should say so plainly. If minor, non-disruptive movement is allowed, it should say that too. It should also clarify whether enforcement is automatic or handled case by case by the league office, as past league guidance has suggested. Clear rules would not end every disagreement, but they would replace assumption and politics with a transparent standard.

Jason Williams said on his podcast that LeBron James should "stand the f--- still" during the national anthem, adding that was the rule when he played across 12 NBA seasons.
The criticism targets James' repeated habit this season of swaying and appearing to rehearse a golf swing during pregame anthem ceremonies for Philadelphia.
Williams also speculated James was fined for moving and dressing differently from teammates, but the NBA has not issued any fine over the mid-anthem warm-ups.
The backlash has widened beyond Williams: Charles Barkley has also criticized James, and President Donald Trump has weighed in on the anthem behavior.
