Q: Why was Notre Dame leading Navy despite losing the possession battle so badly in their historic Gillette Stadium matchup?

Notre Dame was leading because it made far more of its limited possessions than Navy did. At halftime in the first-ever Notre Dame-Navy game at Gillette Stadium, Navy had dominated possession for more than 23 minutes and rushed for 163 yards on 35 carries, but the Midshipmen had only 13 points to show for it. Two of Navy’s long, clock-eating drives ended in field goals rather than touchdowns, which kept the score close despite its control of the game. Notre Dame, by contrast, scored quickly. The Irish produced a 75-yard touchdown drive on their first possession, capped by C.J. Carr’s 11-yard pass to Micah Gilbert, and then erased Navy’s late 13-7 lead with Nolan James Jr.’s 52-yard touchdown run in under a minute before halftime. That explosive playmaking allowed Notre Dame to turn fewer chances and less possession time into 14 points. So the possession battle was lopsided, but the efficiency battle was not. Navy controlled the clock and the ground game, yet settled for field goals too often. Notre Dame hit on chunk plays and touchdowns, which is why the Irish still held a 14-13 halftime edge.
