Summary
AP projected late Thursday that Cait Conley, a former Biden administration aide and military veteran, defeated two-term Republican Rep. Mike Lawler in New York’s 17th District.
NY-17 was one of 2026’s most closely watched House races because both parties saw the suburban seat north of New York City as pivotal to control of the chamber.
Lawler tried to balance support for President Donald Trump with an independent image, while the campaign turned sharply on immigration enforcement, sanctuary-law attacks and taxes.
Conley condemned the killing of 18-year-old Sheridan Gorman and said she opposes illegal immigration, but she did not specifically denounce sanctuary laws that Lawler made a central issue.
The district had leaned toward Democrats after Kamala Harris carried it in 2024, and outside forecasters had already rated it anywhere from toss-up to lean Democrat.
