Samsung R95H Micro RGB TV Wins ZDNET Recommendation as Best Buy Cuts Price by Up to $1,000

Q: Is Samsung's Micro RGB TV a true OLED killer, or just a clever marketing spin on older backlit technology?

Samsung’s Micro RGB TV is not a true “OLED killer,” but it is more than marketing spin. The key distinction is technical. The R95H is still an LCD-based TV with an RGB mini-LED-style backlight, not a self-emissive display like OLED or true Micro-LED. That means it still relies on local dimming rather than pixel-level light control. In practice, that leaves some room for blooming, haloing, and weaker off-axis performance than OLED, even if Samsung’s redesigned RGB lenses reduce those flaws. What makes the R95H notable is that this older LCD architecture has been pushed much further than usual. ZDNET’s lab testing found excellent SDR color accuracy, very wide color coverage, and strong contrast, with up to 94%+ Rec.2020 measured in HDR and claimed BT.2020 coverage near 100%. Reviews also point to deep blacks, vivid color volume, high brightness, and a matte anti-glare screen that can outperform many OLEDs in bright rooms. That gives it real advantages over OLED in some situations. It should be less vulnerable to burn-in concerns, can sustain brighter highlights, and adds strong gaming specs such as 4K/165Hz and FreeSync Premium Pro. For mixed daytime viewing, sports, and gaming, it may be the more practical premium TV. But OLED still keeps the edge in absolute black levels, pixel-level contrast, and consistency in dark-room cinema. So the R95H is best seen as a serious high-end challenger that narrows the gap, not a knockout blow to OLED.
