The first phone used physical friction: E-paper naturally discouraged doomscrolling because it was unpleasant. The new phone shifts that burden to software, with Focus Hours, app blocking, notification controls, grayscale mode, and a stripped-down Minimal OS layered over Android. That makes business sense and likely broadens appeal. But it also creates the tension critics see: if social media is smooth again, the phone is “minimal” only if the user chooses to make it so.
