Probably yes—if Zepp wants solar charging to be meaningfully useful, it is hard to see it sticking with a standard AMOLED-only design. The Zepp app’s new “Solar Boost Mode” appears built around aggressively cutting power draw: only time, battery level and sunlight intensity remain on screen, while syncing and other features are disabled. That kind of extreme power-saving mode makes much more sense on a low-power MIP or transflective display, which can hold a static image with minimal energy use. On AMOLED, the screen itself consumes far more power, so the small solar gain would likely be marginal. Industry precedent points the same way. Garmin’s long-running solar watches use MIP displays, not AMOLED, because solar input in the milliwatt range can materially offset a MIP watch’s low baseline consumption. By contrast, no major brand has shipped a proven solar-AMOLED smartwatch with meaningful real-world charging gains. Suunto’s solar models also relied on MIP, and when it moved to AMOLED, solar was dropped. That said, Zepp has not confirmed the display technology. The “Dual Solar” name and app references to “watch_face_input_power” and “case_back_input_power” leave open other possibilities, including a hybrid approach or multiple solar collection zones. But if the goal is not just marketing solar, but actually extending runtime in outdoor use, a return to MIP looks like the most credible path.
