Summary
Nearly 74,000 men age 40 and older were tracked for up to five years, and tadalafil users showed a 22% higher risk of glaucoma than non-users.
The British Journal of Ophthalmology study compared about 37,000 men prescribed tadalafil with a matched group not using PDE5 inhibitors, and also found 32% higher odds of elevated eye pressure and 33% higher risk of primary open-angle glaucoma.
Dr. Valerie Kattouf, an Illinois Eye Institute optometrist not involved in the research, said glaucoma often has no early symptoms and is best detected through comprehensive eye exams.
Researchers said the observational study shows an association, not causation, and does not mean patients should stop tadalafil; instead, long-term users—especially those with existing risk factors—may need regular eye monitoring.
