Meteorologists downgraded Invest 96L because the system was still poorly organized and its window for strengthening appears shorter than earlier forecasts suggested. The National Hurricane Center said the disturbance’s showers and thunderstorms remained disorganized, with storm activity displaced from the low-pressure center rather than wrapping tightly around it. That matters because a tropical depression needs a more aligned, closed circulation. In other words, 96L was moving over warm water, but it still was not putting its core structure together. Forecasters also became less confident about its longer-term environment. While conditions are still “somewhat favorable” for the next day or two, models and outlooks indicate that by the weekend the system is likely to run into less supportive conditions, especially stronger wind shear and drier air. Those factors can tear thunderstorms away from the center and choke off development. So the downgrade from 70% to 60% was not because the wave suddenly became harmless or because crossing the ocean itself reduced the threat. It reflected a more cautious forecast based on two competing signals: a short-term chance to become a tropical depression, but a growing risk that hostile weekend conditions will stop further organization or cause the system to weaken before it can significantly strengthen.

Invest 96L now has a 60% chance of becoming the Atlantic season’s next tropical depression or storm within two to seven days, down from 70% a day earlier.
Disorganized showers and thunderstorms around the low-pressure system southwest of the Cape Verde Islands prompted the downgrade, and forecasters said conditions should turn less favorable by the weekend.
A second area once watched northeast of Bermuda lost all development potential after moving into unsupportive waters, leaving the National Hurricane Center tracking only one Atlantic system.
The quieter outlook fits a slow 2026 season with just three named storms so far, even as the climatological peak from mid-August to mid-October is underway.
