Tropical Storm Marie to Become Hurricane as 3-6-Foot Surf Threatens San Diego Beaches

Marie is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane Wednesday, with swells expected to push north and create life-threatening surf and rip currents along parts of Southern California over Labor Day weekend.
The biggest surf is expected from Oceanside northward, while Orange County breaks exposed to south-southeast swell could see the strongest impact as the bulk of the waves builds over the weekend.
Most of San Diego may avoid Marie’s most sharply angled swell at first, but a separate south-southwest swell could still bring 3-6-foot surf across much of the county through the weekend.
Upper-70s to low-80s coastal temperatures are likely to draw large beach crowds, and forecast models also show a chance of rain from Marie and possible backcountry lightning.
