Summary
Kauai and Niihau went under a tropical storm warning Sunday as Category 3 Hurricane Lowell was forecast to pass west of the islands late Monday into Tuesday.
Lowell was packing 120 mph winds about 545 miles south-southwest of Lihue, with forecasters warning Kauai could get 6-10 inches of rain, isolated totals of 14 inches and coastal flooding up to 3 feet.
Hawaii officials said the storm could bring flash flooding, mudslides and power outages, urging residents to fill gas tanks, charge devices, refill prescriptions and prepare to stay home for several days.
Lihue residents were already clearing supermarket shelves and boarding up homes, while the Big Island was forecast to receive 4-8 inches of rain, with some spots reaching 12 inches.
