AT&T Launches Galaxy S26 FE From Under $3 a Month, Offering Up to $800 Switch Credits

Q: Why might Samsung's newest budget flagship actually be its own worst enemy in the market?

Samsung’s biggest problem is that the Galaxy S26 FE sits in an awkward middle ground where Samsung’s own lineup makes it hard to justify. At $699.99, the S26 FE is $50 more than last year, but the hardware changes are modest. It keeps much of the same camera system, battery size, display approach and 8GB RAM setup as the S25 FE, with the main upgrade being the newer Exynos 2500 chip and added AI features. That makes it look less like a clear value leap and more like a more expensive repeat. The bigger issue is internal competition. Samsung’s own discounts reportedly bring the 256GB Galaxy S26 down to roughly the same price as the 256GB S26 FE, while the standard S26 offers faster performance, better materials and stronger flagship credentials. If buyers can get the “real” flagship for similar money, the FE loses its core appeal. At the same time, buyers focused on value can move down to Samsung’s Galaxy A57, which is far cheaper and still offers a large AMOLED display, strong battery life and long software support. Rival phones such as Google’s Pixel 10A and Apple’s iPhone 17E also undercut or closely pressure the FE on price. Samsung can point to real cost pressures, especially rising DRAM and NAND prices, but that does not solve the market perception problem. The FE line works best when it is clearly a bargain. This year, the S26 FE risks being neither cheap enough for value buyers nor distinct enough from the S26 for premium shoppers.

Q: Is the global AI boom secretly forcing you to pay more for your next budget smartphone?

Yes. The AI boom is not the only reason, but it is a major reason many “budget” and lower-cost smartphones are getting more expensive. The key link is memory. AI data centers are soaking up huge amounts of DRAM and NAND, the same broad chip categories used for phone RAM and storage. Analysts at Omdia say memory costs have surged so much that, in phones priced below $400, RAM and storage now make up roughly 59% to 64% of the bill of materials, nearly double the share from a year earlier. That is especially damaging for cheap phones because their profit margins are already thin and there are fewer other parts manufacturers can downgrade to offset the increase. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 FE is a visible example. Its starting price rose to $699.99, about $50 above the S25 FE, and Samsung has pointed to higher RAM and component costs. The FE line is not a true budget range, but it shows the same pressure spreading across the market. Research firms including Omdia, Counterpoint and IDC say low-end Android phones are the most exposed. Some forecast the sub-$400 segment will shrink sharply as vendors either raise prices, cut specs, or retreat from the category. Premium phones may also rise in price, but budget buyers are hit harder because memory is a larger share of total cost. So if your next affordable phone costs more, the global AI infrastructure buildout is likely part of the reason, even if brands rarely market it that way.

AT&T is selling Samsung’s newly launched Galaxy S26 FE nationwide to both new and existing customers, with online add-a-line pricing below $3 a month and in-store new-customer pricing at $7.99.
The carrier is pairing the phone with retention and switching incentives: existing customers can upgrade for $12.99 a month, and switchers can get eligible phone balances paid off up to $800 per line for as many as 10 lines.
AT&T also bundled a 30-day free wireless trial and annual upgrade options through Next Up Anytime, while business users get Enterprise Edition perks and FirstNet-ready access for first responders.
The push comes just after Samsung introduced the Galaxy S26 FE at $699.99 for 128GB and $799.99 for 256GB, as U.S. carriers compete with aggressive device promotions from Verizon and T-Mobile.
