Sonos Launches Sonos 27 Update With 4 New Features and ChatGPT Integration

It is not literally flawless, but Sonos is positioning it as close to instant and largely hands-free within clear limits. According to Sonos, its Sonos Positioning Technology uses brief high-frequency audio signals to detect where two matching portable speakers are placed relative to each other and to a compatible soundbar. When the speakers are moved into the correct rear-surround positions, the system automatically bonds them in about eight seconds and assigns left and right channels without any manual mapping. When one is carried away, both revert to standalone portable speakers automatically. That said, this is not a universal no-setup feature. Users still need a supported home-theater product such as Beam Gen 2, Beam Ultra, Arc, or Arc Ultra, with the microphone enabled, plus two matching supported portables, currently Move 2 or Sonos Play models. The speakers must already be added to the Sonos system as separate rooms, and Sonos says they should be in the same room with line-of-sight to the soundbar. There are also functional trade-offs while bonded as surrounds: the portables act only as rear surrounds, and Bluetooth, Line-In, AirPlay, and Direct Control are disabled during surround use. So the practical answer is that Sonos removes the most tedious part of surround setup—manual pairing and left/right assignment—and makes the role switch nearly automatic, but only in supported setups and environmental conditions.

Sonos 27 is now live on the App Store for all Sonos S2 products, marking the first rollout of features the company previewed last week.
