Samsung appears to have done it for margin and product positioning, not because the S26 FE needed the downgrade technically. The clearest evidence is that the phone changes very little from the S25 FE beyond the newer Exynos 2500 chip and updated AI/software features, yet Samsung raises the starting price from $650 to $700 while reportedly cutting the USB-C port from USB 3.2 Gen 1 to USB 2.0. That quieter USB downgrade has real consequences. Reports say it removes faster wired file transfers and also drops wired DeX and DisplayPort Alt Mode support, leaving only wireless DeX. For buyers who use USB-C for external displays, desktop-style workflows, or moving large video files, that is a meaningful loss, not a minor spec-sheet change. Why do it anyway? The broader context points to cost pressure and segmentation. Multiple reports cite rising memory costs and wider component inflation across smartphones. Samsung also seems to be protecting the gap between the FE and the more expensive Galaxy S26 line: the FE keeps the premium look, big display, IP68 rating, cameras, battery life, and seven years of updates, but trims less visible hardware features to control costs and avoid getting too close to the standard S models. The result is a phone that remains solid on its own, but the strategy weakens its value case. Samsung is asking buyers to pay more mainly for a newer processor, software support, and AI refinements while accepting a worse USB port and otherwise familiar hardware.
