Falcons Extend Gervon Dexter Sr. for 4 Years Ahead of Week 4 Saints Clash

Q: Will Gervon Dexter Sr. instantly justify his massive $78 million extension by dominating a desperate divisional rival on Monday night?

Probably not instantly, at least not in the box-score sense of a sack binge, but he is well-positioned to make the extension look justified by disrupting New Orleans all night. The evidence for Atlanta’s bet on Gervon Dexter Sr. is already strong. Through three games, he has 15 pressures, three quarterback hits, a half sack and a deflected pass, while ranking near the top of the league in pressure rate among interior defenders. Atlanta’s front as a whole has been elite early, producing pressure on 41.6% of dropbacks despite one of the NFL’s lowest blitz rates. That suggests Dexter’s impact is real even if it is not always reflected in sack totals. Monday’s matchup gives him a favorable setup. The Saints enter banged up on defense, but the more relevant point for Dexter is that this projects as a tense divisional game in which New Orleans may need to throw in key moments. If that happens, Dexter’s interior push could be a major factor against a desperate 1-2 rival in a loud, emotional Superdome setting. Still, one game is too small a sample to “justify” a four-year, $78 million extension on its own. Interior linemen often dominate by collapsing pockets, forcing hurried throws and helping teammates finish plays. If Dexter produces pressure, helps contain the run and contributes to another strong Falcons defensive showing, Atlanta will view that as validation even without a two-sack headline night.

Atlanta agreed Wednesday to a four-year extension with defensive lineman Gervon Dexter Sr., locking up a young defender it acquired from Chicago at the end of August.
Ian Cunningham cited Dexter's power, disruption and growth on and off the field, while coordinator Jeff Ulbrich said the former Bear has already validated the Falcons' belief in him and is still "scratching the surface."
The extension comes with Atlanta heading to New Orleans for Monday Night Football and with relatively light injury concerns, though two defensive starters were listed questionable Saturday.
Bijan Robinson also enters Week 4 with momentum after winning NFC Offensive Player of the Week; his 467 scrimmage yards lead the NFL, and another 200-yard prime-time game would make league history.
