Apple Brings $79 USB-C Pencil Support to iPhone Duo in iOS 27.2

Q: Why did Apple secretly hide an entire iOS update from millions of users just for one device?

Apple appears to have hidden iOS 27.1 because it was never meant to be a general iPhone update. It is effectively a device-specific release for the new foldable iPhone Duo. The strongest reason is secrecy. The Duo introduces a different software experience tied to its foldable design, dual displays, hinge-based app layouts, new camera behaviors, and other custom interface changes. Keeping those features out of the normal iPhone update channel helped Apple avoid exposing unreleased details through public beta code, update menus, or release notes before the phone’s launch. There is also a practical engineering reason. Apple seems to have split the Duo’s software into its own release track so it could ship the foldable on stable launch firmware without forcing millions of other iPhones onto an interim version they did not need. That reduces complexity in the broader rollout and lets Apple keep standard models on iOS 27.0.1 until iOS 27.2 is ready. The evidence supports that reading. iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27.1 preinstalled, Apple released a signed iOS 27.1 IPSW only for that device, and the release notes mention only generic bug fixes. At the same time, Apple has already been testing iOS 27.2 publicly for a month, and its release candidate now includes Duo support as well. So Apple did not hide iOS 27.1 to deprive users of features. It used 27.1 as a quiet, hardware-specific bridge release for one new product, while the rest of the iPhone lineup moves straight to iOS 27.2.

iOS 27.2 is expected around Oct. 26, bringing Apple Pencil support to the iPhone Duo just days after the foldable goes on sale Friday.
A release-candidate build rolled out Monday already includes the feature, according to a tipster who said it works on the new device.
The support is limited to the $79 Apple Pencil (USB-C); Apple Pencil Pro and older Pencil models are not compatible.
Apple says Duo users will be able to take notes, sketch and mark up documents on either display, while Reachability for the foldable is still slated for later this year.
The update follows Apple's iOS 27.1 release for Duo alone, with other iPhones set to move directly to iOS 27.2 next week.
