Kade Anderson has the talent to succeed immediately, but a dominant debut is far from certain against this Cubs lineup. The case for Anderson is strong. Seattle is calling up the 22-year-old left-hander after one of the best minor league seasons in baseball: a 1.06 ERA, 0.64 WHIP, 135 strikeouts and just 13 walks in 93 1/3 innings at Double-A. Evaluators view him as a polished four-pitch starter with plus command, and T-Mobile Park is a favorable setting for a debut. He has the profile to miss bats right away, even without overpowering velocity. The warning sign is the opponent. Chicago has been one of the most productive offenses in baseball, ranking near the top of the league in runs and showing real power throughout the lineup. More importantly for this matchup, multiple reports describe the Cubs as especially dangerous on the road and very strong against left-handed pitching. Pete Crow-Armstrong, Seiya Suzuki and Alex Bregman headline a group that can punish mistakes, and Chicago’s elite defense also gives its pitchers margin if the game stays tight. That makes the likeliest outcome somewhere in the middle: Anderson can still post a good debut, but expecting total shutdown stuff against this offense is aggressive. Their larger offensive problem has been weak contact rather than swing-and-miss, ranking near the bottom of the league in recent wRC+ despite putting plenty of balls in play. That makes Weathers viable because his current profile is built not only on strikeouts, but also on weaker contact, ground balls and improved command. The risk is that Toronto can force long at-bats and turn balls in play into traffic, and there is also a warning sign: his most recent outing against the Blue Jays turned into a six-earned-run start. The most reasonable expectation is another solid outing if his pitch mix holds, but with a modest strikeout total rather than a dominant bat-missing performance.
